Certain regions of India are currently experiencing an oppressive heatwave, with temperatures soaring above 45°C. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Sunday and an orange alert for May 20 to 22, indicating that the scorching heat waves are expected to persist throughout the next week.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) declares a heatwave when the maximum temperature reaches or exceeds 45 degrees Celsius. On Saturday, the temperature surpassed 45°C at ten stations, prompting the IMD to warn of a “very high likelihood of developing heat illness and heat stroke in all ages.”

The maximum temperature recorded at New Delhi’s Najafgarh on Sunday was 47.8 degrees Celsius, which is above normal and the highest of the season so far. Officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) recently reported it as the highest temperature documented in the country this year, followed by 47.7 degrees Celsius in Agra.

1. Plan your day wisely.

  • Avoid going out in the sun, especially between noon and 3 p.m., when the sun’s rays are strongest.
  • If you must go out, try to do so in the early morning or late afternoon when the UV index is lower.

2. Stay hydrated

  • Drink sufficient water as often as possible, even if you are not thirsty.
  • Carry water with you while travelling to stay hydrated on the go.

3. Dress light

  • Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose, and porous cotton clothes to keep you cool and protected.
  • Use protective gear like goggles, an umbrella or hat, shoes, or chappals to shield yourself from the sun.

4. Avoid strenuous activities

  • Avoid strenuous activities when the outside temperature is high to prevent heat exhaustion.
  • If you work outside, use a hat or an umbrella, and also use a damp cloth on your head, neck, face, and limbs to stay cool.

5. Rehydrate and keep cool.

  • Use ORS, homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water), lemon water, buttermilk, etc., which help to rehydrate the body.
  • Keep animals in the shade and give them plenty of water to drink to prevent heat stress.
  • Keep your home cool by using curtains, shutters, or sunshades and opening windows at night to let in the cool air.
  • Use fans and damp clothing, and take a bath in cold water frequently to stay cool.
