Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to address public rallies in Kerala on Monday as part of the BJP’s election campaign for the Lok Sabha elections.

PM Modi will attend a public meeting at Kunnamangalam in Alathur constituency of Thrissur district. He will participate in the election campaign for NDA candidates TN Sarasu and Suresh Gopi contesting in Alathur and Thrissur respectively.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP had fielded actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi from Thrissur and recorded 28.2 per cent vote share, while 2014 candidate KP Sreesan had got 11.15 per cent votes.

After that, the PM will reach Kattakada in Thiruvananthapuram district, where he will campaign for V Muraleedharan and Rajiv Chandrasekhar, two Union ministers contesting under the NDA banner from Attingal and Thiruvananthapuram constituencies respectively.

Voting will be held in the second phase on April 16 for all 20 Lok Sabha seats in the state.

In the assembly elections, the party won only once from Nemam in Thiruvananthapuram district, where O Rajagopal had won in 2016. This seat has been the only seat among the 20 Lok Sabha seats where the party managed to come second in 2014.

In the 2019 elections, BJP’s Kummanam Rajasekharan had secured 31.3 per cent of the votes, the highest among the BJP’s votes in 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state. However, with Chandrashekhar entering the fray in the capital, the matter has become triangular, making it one of the most watched battles in the general elections.

The BJP has never won a Lok Sabha seat in Kerala, while the number of BJP MLAs in Kerala has dropped from the single seat it won in 2016 to zero in 2021. It contested 115 out of 140 seats in the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections. It secured 11.3 percent of the total votes polled, but failed to win a single seat.

The BJP’s vote share in Kerala was its highest in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, when it managed to garner around 13 per cent of the total votes.

The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) won 19 of the 20 seats in Kerala that year.

This is Modi’s sixth visit to the state this year. Later he will visit Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, where he will address a public meeting in the evening.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will also reach Kerala on a two-day visit and will address a UDF rally in North Kozhikode in the evening and participate in several programs in his constituency in the next few days.

The former Congress president will face senior CPI leader Annie Raja and Kerala BJP chief K Surendran from Wayanad.
