According to a report in India Today NE, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga on July 24 said that neither the state government nor the Mizo National Front (MNF) is afraid of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre. Zoramthanga is also the President of the Mizo National Front (MNF).
The MNF is an ally of the NDA but supported the no-confidence motion moved in the Lok Sabha by the opposition alliance.
Addressing party workers in Aizawl, Zoramthanga said that even though the party is with the NDA, they do not agree with the policies of the NDA. He said that when the BJP-led central government directed the Mizoram government to take back all the refugees from Myanmar, the Mizoram government refused. Around 35,000 Myanmar nationals have sought refuge in Mizoram since February 2021 after the Myanmar military carried out a coup there.
He said, “I announced in the assembly that we will not deport them (Myanmar refugees) but give them shelter and food. MNF and BJP work together for development, but whatever they (BJP) say, Won’t advocate for him.”
He also said that MNF MPs in both houses of parliament would oppose the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) if it was introduced for legislation. On 4 July, the Chief Minister of Mizoram wrote to the Law Commission of India that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) was against the interests of ethnic minorities and Mizos. He said that the MNF believes that the UCC conflicts with the social customs and traditions of the Mizos which are protected by Article 371(g) of the Constitution.
