Innovation will improve quality of recycled aluminum
Allow for more diverse uses, including electric vehicle manufacturing

The license covers a technological innovation capable of removing metal impurities from recycled aluminum melt, thereby improving the quality of aluminum and allowing it to be used for more diverse applications, including electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing.

This innovation is part of a research and development project first funded by REMADE in 2020. According to the R&D project team, it costs less to produce recycled aluminum and saves more than 90% of the energy needed to produce virgin (primary) aluminum. Aluminum is one of the most recycled materials in the world, but there is room to increase its recycling rate, cost, recyclability and sustainability. The US Geological Survey estimates aluminum consumption in the US to be 5.100 million metric tons (MMT) in 2022.
