Wildfires Blaze in Hawaii’s Historic Lahaina
How the wildfires started remains a mystery but security footage shared by a bird sanctuary in Maui may provide some answers.
The video shows, as some believe, a tree falling on a power line, which burst into flames and continues to burn.
The wildfire, which first broke out on August 8, was growing rapidly, leaving people in Lahaina little time to evacuate.
More than 2,000 buildings and houses have been burnt and 1,000 people are still missing.
Only 35 percent of the burned area was discovered, Airport Governor Josh Green said he expected the death toll to rise in the coming days.
As recovery efforts are underway, Mr. President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden He said he would travel to Maui on Monday, August 21, to meet with local, state and federal officials as well as victims.
Federal agencies provide assistance and packages to Hawaii victims
Several US government agencies have prepared packages and assistance for those affected by the wildfires in Hawaii.
“Through the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR), an agency within the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), deployed 25 additional specialists from the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team (DMORT) Gaya and a Victim Identification Center (VIC) team will go to Hawaii to augment state and local mortuary resources to respond to the wildfires.
The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) also announced a package of rebates to speed up residents’ recovery.
This includes suspending Community Development Block Grants to allow more funding, providing flexibility in Home Investment Partnerships, extending the time period individuals can receive temporary assistance and much more.

Wildfires in California: Evacuation orders given as head wildfire spreads
A raging wildfire in northern California has forced locals to evacuate a nearby town.
Some residents of California’s Siskiyou County – just south of Hamburg and the state’s northern border – were ordered to flee their homes as the Head Fire in the nearby Klamath National Forest began threatening the area. According to local forest officials, the fire is estimated to spread between 3,000 and 4,000 acres.
