Garrow also recently said that Obama hoped that his biographers would never read the letters he wrote to his ex-girlfriend Sheila Miyoshi Jagger, to whom he proposed before marrying Michelle.
“Barack made it clear to me that he hoped I would never read him, I might put it that way. I think if the letters to Sheila ever become public, I think it will be a seminal event,” Garrow said. Obama is reportedly ‘insecure’
Garrow further stated that a mixed-race marriage to someone like Jagger could have made Obama’s political image more difficult for him.
Garrow said, “One aspect that I would endorse or that is unavoidably true is that by 1988, he knew he wanted to run for public office in Chicago.” “And he knew… that having a half-Dutch, half-Japanese wife like Sheila Jagger wouldn’t do Black Chicago any favors… Having a non-Black spouse was an active political problem for a Black candidate 25, 35 years ago. Was.”
Garrow also interestingly stated that he believes Obama is just as “insecure” as his successor, Donald Trump.
“They need to feel like they’re victorious, successful,” Garrow said. “It is perhaps the central aspect of his political persona that people have to appreciate. There is an inability to accept defeat, to admit defeat.”
